Natural fibres have been integral in human life for hundreds of years however, since the introduction of synthetic materials in the 1900s, particularly after WWII the production of natural fibres declined as synthetic material started to take over. In a 2019 report by Textile Exchange it was stated that polyester had a market share of around 51.5% global fibre production…. (SOURCE) Cotton, bamboo, linen, wool, silk and hemp are all examples of natural fibres, which are sourced from either a plant or an animal. In the current world of stretching definitions for financial gain some companies try to extend the word ‘natural fibre’ to regenerated fibres such as viscose, modal or lyocell. However, this is not the case they are manmade cellulosic fibres (please see graph below). In comparison to synthetic fibres (polyester, nylon etc.) natural fibres offer better comfort and quality to the user. They are healthier as they absorb perspiration and allow the skin to breath. People don speak of it enough but the skin is the largest organ. Why would you want to wrap it up in plastic and prevent it from breathing? From an environmental perspective as a board rule natural fibres are also a better choice as they are nontoxic, renewable, biodegrable and can be more easily recycled. They also don’t shed micro plastics when washed. Due to the depletion of petroleum resources that are used to make many synthetic fibres the importance of natural fibres has risen once again. Next time you are looking to purchase a new item of clothing or bedding make sure to flip the tag and read what it is made from.
